Arlene Hutton

“Had Arlene Hutton been around during Broadway’s golden age, her finely wrought plays might rank with those of William Inge or Horton Foote. Among postmodern dramatists, Hutton stands apart, relying on traditional techniques in an era where such values grow ever rarer.”
—David Nichols, LA Times

I Dream Before I Take the StandIn support of those affected by sexual violence, playwright Arlene Hutton and Playscripts are offering a free download of Hutton’s script I Dream Before I Take the Stand. In this twenty-minute one-act play a defense lawyer cross-examines a woman during her testimony in a sexual assault case—and in doing so, horribly distorts her perfectly innocent walk in the park. The play was called “a new feminist classic” when it premiered in Edinburgh in 1995.

In addition to permission for making copies of the script, theatres, schools and organizations may produce readings and productions of I Dream Before I Take the Stand, royalty-free for certain uses, including benefits for, fundraisers for appropriate non-profits, schools using the script as a presentation to raise awareness, etc. provided they go through Playscripts, Inc.
